4. Gorillas in my midst - a Ugandan odyssey

To be in the presence of one of our closest relatives, gorillas, is a humbling experience. This is the story of a journey through Uganda to search for wildlife and in particular primates which abound in this part of the world. Not only gorillas and chimpanzees were seen but other primates such as red and black and white colobus monkeys,  grey cheeked mandabey, l’hoest’s guenon plus red tailed monkeys and, of course, vervets and baboons. Tracking gorillas into the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and to be so close that one touched the arm of a person next to me was the highlight of the expedition but watching chimpanzees sit less that an metre away was an equal joy. Bird life was spectacular and in the savanah areas and along the Nile below the Murchison Falls all the animals that you would hope to see were viewed – hundreds of hippos, crocodiles, lions, elephants, giraffes, antelopes and a host of other interesting animals.
