2. Sing sing - Birds and tribes of Papua New Guinea

In some ways Papua New Guinea is a difficult country. It is remote, there are often skirmishes between the tribes, locals carry machetes, tear gas is not uncommon in disturbances, it is hot and humid and the birds, including the birds of paradise, are incredibly difficult to photograph. However, if you arrive in September and visit the highlands you can see amazing tribes in full traditional costume, you can visit Goroka where over 130 tribes gather for a Sing Sing – a gathering to celebrate their country’s independence when individual tribes dance and sing for three days continuously in colourful outfits displaying birds of paradise feathers as headdresses and if you are lucky you will see several species of the birds themselves in the rain forest.

This talk focuses on the tribes and the Sing Sing but ventures into the rain forest where up to eleven species of Birds of Paradise are seen together with a myriad of other tropical birds.
